UGC Opens applications for ODL and Online Programmes for 2026–27

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has opened the application process for eligible Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) seeking recognition to offer programmes through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online modes for the 2026–27 academic cycle. The recognition will apply to programmes beginning with the January–February 2027 session and subsequent intakes.

As per the schedule, institutions can submit their applications through the UGC Distance Education Bureau (DEB) portal from September 1 to September 15, 2026. After completing the online process, applicants are required to send the original affidavit and supporting documents to the UGC by September 25.

The Commission has clarified that submitting an application does not automatically guarantee recognition. Each proposal will be assessed against the prescribed UGC regulations and eligibility requirements for conducting ODL or online programmes.

The move is expected to support the expansion of flexible higher education opportunities while maintaining regulatory oversight and academic standards. With online and distance learning becoming increasingly important for working professionals, students in remote locations and learners seeking flexible study options, recognition from the UGC remains a key requirement for institutions operating in this space.

Eligible institutions have been advised to carefully review the applicable regulations, documentation requirements and application timelines before submitting their proposals.

The latest application window reflects the UGC’s continuing efforts to regulate and expand India’s digital and flexible higher education ecosystem, while ensuring that recognised institutions meet established academic and operational standards.
