The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 13,186 additional MBBS seats for the 2026–27 academic session, marking a significant expansion of India’s medical education capacity. With the latest addition, the country now has 1,40,214 undergraduate medical seats across 836 medical colleges, excluding Institutes of National Importance.
The expansion comes at a time when demand for medical education continues to remain high, with lakhs of students competing for MBBS seats through NEET-UG each year. The increased intake is expected to provide additional opportunities to aspiring medical students while supporting the country’s need for a larger healthcare workforce.
Karnataka recorded the highest increase, with 1,650 new seats, followed by Tamil Nadu with 1,250, Bihar with 1,240 and Uttar Pradesh with 1,200. Assam has also received an additional 100 MBBS seats, taking its total to 1,975.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma welcomed the NMC decision, describing the expansion as an important boost for medical education and healthcare capacity. He emphasised the importance of creating more opportunities for students and increasing the pool of trained doctors.

The latest increase includes seats across both government and private medical colleges. Of the 13,186 additional seats, 2,786 have been added in government colleges and 10,400 in private institutions.
The development reflects the continued expansion of India’s medical education infrastructure and could help strengthen the healthcare talent pipeline in the coming years.
