Haryana expands foreign language learning in Government Schools

The Haryana government is expanding opportunities for students in government schools to learn foreign languages as part of efforts to equip them with skills suited to a more globally connected education and employment landscape.

French language classes have already been introduced in 26 government schools, with 60 teachers trained with support from the Embassy of France. The state is also working with the Embassy of Germany to develop German-language education in government schools.

For the German programme, 80 teachers have been selected and are undergoing training to prepare them to teach the language to students. German is being introduced as an optional subject in the state’s government schools.

The initiative is part of Haryana’s broader focus on providing students with exposure to international languages and preparing them for opportunities beyond the domestic education and employment ecosystem. The approach is also aligned with the emphasis on multilingual and global learning under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

The state is also preparing to introduce additional foreign languages in phases. Recent government statements indicate that Japanese and Korean are being considered for introduction alongside French and German.

The move comes as schools increasingly look beyond conventional academic learning to develop communication, cultural awareness and skills that can support students in pursuing higher education and career opportunities with an international dimension.

Haryana has simultaneously been working on strengthening the wider learning environment in government schools. The government has identified 250 CM-EEE (Chief Minister Excellence and Early English) schools, while infrastructure and classroom improvements are also being undertaken across the state.

The foreign-language programme therefore forms part of a broader effort to expand the academic exposure available to students in government schools while strengthening their readiness for future educational and professional opportunities.
