The Central Government has set an ambitious 2029 target to make India drug-free, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah announcing a three-year roadmap focused on strengthening the country’s fight against narcotics. The plan will run from July 2026 to July 2029 and combines enforcement, prevention, rehabilitation and public participation.
A key component of the initiative is the creation of a nationwide network of one lakh ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Mitras’, who will help spread awareness about substance abuse and encourage communities, particularly young people, to stay away from drugs. The government plans to involve institutions and youth organisations such as NCC, NSS and My Bharat in the campaign.
The roadmap is built around four broad areas: intelligence-led enforcement, control of precursor and synthetic drugs, demand and harm reduction, and stronger coordination and capacity building. Authorities will also focus on disrupting drug trafficking networks, investigating financial links and improving coordination among enforcement agencies.

According to the government, more than 11.9 million kilograms of narcotics worth ₹1.89 lakh crore were seized between 2014 and 2026. Under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, around 250 million people have been reached, while rehabilitation efforts have helped hundreds of thousands of individuals.
The government also plans to expand the network of de-addiction centres, making prevention, treatment and rehabilitation an important part of the national strategy.
