Centre plans nationwide CBT infrastructure as NEET-UG may move online

The Ministry of Education is working on a nationwide Computer-Based Testing (CBT) infrastructure plan that could pave the way for conducting the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) in online mode.

The proposed framework is aimed at expanding the availability of examination centres, standardising technical requirements and creating sufficient capacity to conduct large-scale entrance examinations digitally. The Ministry is also examining different models for sourcing and managing the infrastructure required for the transition.

NEET-UG is currently conducted in pen-and-paper format and attracts nearly 25 lakh candidates annually for admission to undergraduate medical and allied courses. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the examination, already administers several major tests, including JEE-Main, CUET-UG and UGC-NET, through computer-based systems.

However, a shift to CBT for NEET-UG has not yet been finalised. The government is assessing infrastructure requirements, implementation timelines and the likely impact on candidates, particularly those in rural and remote areas and districts where reliable internet connectivity may be limited.

The proposed move is linked to wider efforts to strengthen the country’s examination system following concerns over examination security and paper leaks. A high-level task force headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani is currently examining reforms to improve the conduct and security of public examinations. Its recommendations, along with consultations involving the Ministry of Health and the National Medical Commission, are expected to inform the final decision.

If implemented, the nationwide CBT infrastructure could mark a significant shift in how one of India’s largest entrance examinations is conducted, while also creating a broader digital testing ecosystem for future national-level examinations.
